From a Guide to Romania

Jump to: navigation, search

Banat Region is situated in the south-western part of the country and has been known under this name since the 18th century. This area was renown for its beauty ever since the Roman occupation, who valued it for its highly curative resources.
The Hungarian and German minorities are the most important ones in this region, due to the fact that the western part of the country has been under Austrian and Hungarian rule for a long period of time. Their presence is obvious especially in the rural areas, where intercultural influences are to be found in all forms of local art, including architecture.
